Maybe it was back when Bittersweet Bistro’s Gina Garcia offered those deliciously creative and savory crepes on Spokane’s South Hill. Maybe it was when Madeleine’s Café and Pâtisserie opened in Downtown Spokane with those beautiful melt-in-your-mouth French pastries, and then Jeremy Hansen of Sante introduced Spokane to the taste sensations of charcuterie. Or, maybe it was when Fleur de Sel came to Post Falls all the way from Billings, Mont., bringing all points of France they know so well and take their inspiration from? French country or city sidewalk food, the French have got my attention.
Or, maybe it was when Fleur de Sel came to Post Falls all the way from Billings, Mont., bringing all points of France they know so well and take their inspiration from? French country or city sidewalk food, the French have got my attention.

I grew up watching Julia Child’s passion for French food on public television. The extensive processes intrigue me, the flavorful results fascinate me, and the visual delights satisfy before the taste sensations even brush my lips. I feel so at home with the flavors, the textures and the presentations that French food brings to the table that I crave more and seek them where ever I go these days; especially when you can find them here in the Northwest.

This is why I chose The Pearl Café on a recent trip to Missoula, Mont., for one of Mitch Silver’s collector car auctions. Here we were, hungry and on the hunt for something fabulous after the auction setup, and four great recommendations came our way: The Pearl Café, RedBird, The Silk Road and Scotty’s Table. Since they were all downtown and we could do a quick drive by/walk by to check for curb appeal, I could easily convince Mitch of the curb appeal I found most interesting. Little did he know, I had already decided, sight unseen that The Pearl was the one. Regardless of what the actual curb appeal would be I would say it’s the one because … the French have got my attention of late.

Good decision. Even with other notable restaurants that Missoula is known for, I am glad we—or rather I—chose The Pearl. The entrance hall was lined with local awards of excellence, the greeting was warm and inviting at the curb and once inside, and the service was as friendly as the greeting, and the whole staff worked together for the experience.

With the extent of the menu it was difficult to choose. There was a little something for everyone including the traditional Bacon- Wrapped Scallops for the less adventurous. We started with a tasty array of cheeses, sipped up the Mushroom Bisque with browned butter and dill, shared an avocado, pear, pecan and blue cheese salad, and got a little more adventurous with each taste. My entrée was the Seafood Mixed Grill that had a surprising taste-popping chili aioli and smoky tomato butter with fresh jalapeño sauce that really zinged up the usually buttery seafood dish. Mitch had the Veal Chops with Morels and smashed red potatoes with a creamy morel and Madeira sauce.

And I thought I couldn’t stand one more bite but then … it is a French restaurant. So, we got the Blackout Cake with sweet and salty pecan and coconut caramel, served with brown-sugar ice cream.

Thanks Mitch, for being my favorite person in the world and for tolerating my passion for the French these days. Missoula isn’t really known as a culinary destination, but yes, we did find The Pearl there ... in Missoula.
I have a culinary sin that I must relinquish from my shoulders. Even more so, a guilt that plagues me as someone proudly raised and cultured in Spokane.

I am disgraced to say, as a self-proclaimed foodie, that my mouth had never been spoiled the hearty, delicious, more-than-just-pub-food meals offered at The Elk Public House in Browne’s Addition.

With the approval from the Food Network’s Guy Fieri, the Elk has shined under its label as one of Spokane’s best bets for cheap eats and a good microbrew. But for me, my maiden voyage to The Elk Public House was about more than just the fantastic food. It was all about the

feel. The Elk is not just your regular hip or cool bar spot. The "ambiance” is not just friendly. It sucks you in. You are instantly welcomed and are immediately part of the family and the neighborhood.

	MONDAY LUNCH

As a first-timer, I didn’t know any better than to show up at The Elk during the peak lunch hour and ask to be seated on the patio. The appeal of patio is simple, it is framed by blooming flowers, balanced by large vibrant umbrellas, and accented with the laughter of happy diners. The wait to be seated outside went quick enough, though I have never felt more exclusive than asking to be put on a "list” to be seated….outside.

Starting out with what seemed ordinary enough, I ordered the quesadilla (yes, even despite hearing endless raves about the Garlic and Onion Bread). This flour tortilla stuffed with Cotija and queso fresco cheeses, paired with roasted Poblano peppers, diced onions, and cilantro takes what I’ve experienced an easy late-night microwave gooey mess, into a delightful journey of spicy and creamy. And the smoked jalapeno sour cream for dipping? It was worthy of bathing in.

The salads are plentiful (and by that I mean way more than you can eat), and encompass fresh ingredients and unexpected combinations. I, personally, ordered the raspberry vinaigrette salad, and the toasted almonds combined with the gorgonzola cheese was refreshing, a "good morning” for my taste buds.

The sandwiches are more than just bread and meat and were more than even my caffeine-driven hunger could handle. The Sante Fe Chicken reincorporates the delicious roasted Pablano peppers with pan seared chicken, honey cream cheese, and more. Though, The Elk staple and MUST-HAVE is by far the Grilled Lamb Sandwich, with marinated thinly sliced lamb grilled with red onions, and served with Tsatsiki and mayo on a crunchy fresh French roll. Not to mention that each sandwich is served your choice of Tim's potato chips, potato salad, or their unique house recipe of roasted corn pasta salad.

The specialties are unique from the Swimming Angel (a traditional Thai dish of steamed spinach and char-grilled spinach with a spicy peanut sauce) to the Marinated Pork Soft Tacos (the mango and pineapple chutney has got to be the BEST in the NW!). And they are all affordable too!

All this fantastic food, enjoyed in the paradox that is Browne’s Addition: serene and bustling, modern and rustic, relaxed and chaotic. Drink a beer, eat until satisfied, and settle into that sweet summer sun.
Summer is FINALLY here in Spokane and Coeur d'Alene, and everywhere else in between, and it’s about time we all get out and enjoy it. And what better way to enjoy summer than with good company and great food, all while dining outdoors. Join us in this five-part series exploring your neighborhoods outdoor dining scene: sidewalks, patios, decks and more.

After a long week of all work and no play (other than my playful and relaxing lunch last week at Main Market), so this Wednesday night seemed like the perfect chance to grab my week by storm and get outside and make the most of this fantastic weather. I wanted to feel...transported. I want to travel the world...but without leaving Spokane. I knew just where to go.

LAST NIGHT
For your downtown Italian dining, many Spokane residents turn to classics such as Luigi’s and the Old

Spaghetti Factory, but, one can't ignore that Italian gem, located off of Bernard and Sprague between The

Onion and Suki Yaki Inn — the Italian Kitchen. Here you will find a warm and inviting (and AUTHENTIC) dining experience, with fantastic and classic Italian food (that puts chains like Olive Garden in their proper place).

From dishes such as their Chicken Marsala and delicious Scampi, and specialty pastas like Gnocchi,

Chicken Fettuccini and Seafood Puttanesca, not to mention their appetizers such as the Fried Mozzarella

(their marina sauce is close to life altering), Calamari (which is pan-seared with garlic rather than the

traditional battered and fried), and House-made Meatballs. Even their bread is a creative experience; this

warm doughy bread is laced with chunks of roasted garlic, with balsamic and olive oil for dipping.

I tried the Gnocchi, these plump and rich potato dumplings, which the Italian Kitchen serves with prosciutto, garlic, peas and shallots, all in a Parmesan cream reduction.

But to truly take advantage of your Italian Kitchen experience, sit outside along the sidewalk, which offers a half

dozen tables on the surprisingly serene and romantic atmosphere. With the addition of soft jazz music, attentive

service, warm breezes and a relatively quiet street for downtown, it made for a great Friday night outdoors,

especially with their extensive wine menu highlighting local favorites.

Picking up from where I left off late on Sunday night, I drifted into a restful (and exhausted!) sleep. Then as we all do Monday morning, I scrambled to get ready, snagged some snacks for a thrown together bagged lunch, and ran out of the house.

But, at the end of my lunch break Monday afternoon (which I spent nibbling pretzels and cheese, in front of the computer screen), I realized I felt unsatisfied and cooped up. But don't we all? And where better to enjoy a well-deserved, wonderful and lazy lunch, free from responsibilities and hard work, than at the Main Market Co-op.

TUESDAY @ 12:30pm

Whether or not you’ve joined the organic and local craze, as a Spokane resident it’s almost impossible to not at least know about the Main Market Co-op. This non-profit organization is a haven, if not paradise, for the organic food lover. Frequent shoppers of Main Market are dedicated to supporting local and organic producers, through their full-service grocery with top-quality foods of the smallest "footprint.” (For those of you who aren't savvy on what your "ecological footprint" is, basically if it's small Al Gore likes you, if it's bigger...he doesn't.)

The grocery’s fresh produce is also amazing this time of year with turnips, rainbow carrots, celery, watercress, beautiful red and green chard, not to mention fennel and cabbage. And make sure to check out their specialty cheese section, where they offer Heron Pond Farms (made here in Spokane!) and Ballard Family, too.

Though, for us here at the Sizzle'n Cuisine office, we absolutely cannot get enough of the Main Market Deli! The deli offers entrees such Vietnamese Chicken Thighs, Spanokopita, Main Market Meatloaf, and even a House-made Mac and Cheese. Their salads are seasonal and made daily from Sesame Slaw to Greek-Style Quinoa Salad (delicous and surprisingly crunchy!), and your family traditional Waldorf.

But most recently, the Main Market Deli has begun producing made-to-order sandwiches that put Subway to shame. Starting off with their whole wheat or Tuscan white bread, the succulent lunch meats (roast beef, salami and oven-roasted turkey), delicious cheeses (provolone, swiss, white cheddar, havarti), non-traditional spreads (from veganaise to hummus), and topping it all off with fresh vegetables (lettuce, tomato, cucumber, sprouts, olives, avocado, etc.).

And new this month, the Main Market Co-Op has a new fenced-off outdoor patio for us all to enjoy. My day peaked then and there, at the picnic table, in the bright afternoon sunshine enjoying a cold Thomas Kemper Ginger Ale, super fresh salads, and a fully stacked sandwich.
After a dreary June, with the sun teasing us here and there with glimpses of the hot Inland Northwest summer we have all come to know, love and expect promptly after all the high school students graduate. But with this last season’s winter still lurking in our memory, it wasn’t until this month that we finally hit those sweet notes of the high 80s. So, finally, summer is here Spokane and Coeur d'Alene, and everywhere else in between, and it’s about time we all get out and enjoy it.

And what better way to enjoy summer than with good company and great food, all while dining outdoors.

SUNDAY MORNING

Chaps is that find that once you stumble upon it, you’ll find yourself revisiting it again ... and again ... and again. Everything about it keeps you coming back for more: From the food, the bakery — Cake, the delightful servers, the spacious eclectic interior and most of all the smiling faces of owners Gina Garcia and Celeste Shaw.

The biggest draw for Chaps though, in this summer heat, is the beautiful outdoor seating they offer. Among tables, chairs, grass, and umbrellas, you'll find yourself lost in the oasis that is the Chaps patio seating. And our recommendation to get the full experience of Chaps is to head on down to their Sunday breakfast and brunch offered from 7:30am to 3pm.

Their kitchen offers you typical breakfast selections with a twist from their Meat Lovers Scramble, Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs (featuring Angus chop steak), Biscuits and Gravy (with a hearty homemade sausage gravy! Yum!), as well as their original Blueberry Muffin French Toast, which is two slices of their blueberry bread (cut so thick you’ll think it’s cake!) paired with their blueberry cream cheese.

I tried their Veggie Omelet filled with broccoli, asparagus, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms and cheese, served with potatoes, fruit and toast. (Ask for their Freezer Strawberry Jam; it’s sweet, succulent and turns your regular toast into dessert.)
The most iconic way to finish off a summer weekend, in true and blue American style, is to go out and support your local baseball team — the Spokane Indians! With the sun setting and dusk settling in after the fifth inning, you get to sit, watch and be entertained in perfect summer-evening heat. A great time for the whole family, the Spokane Indians and Avista Stadium are big on audience participation, with games for the kids, as well as interactive cheers and music.
You’ll be surprised when you find yourself on your feet, dancing, yelling and screaming our Indians into a victory. Or, even on the polar opposite side of the experience, you can simply just enjoy a cold beer, grumble and swear under your breath at the umpire, and snack on some good old-fashioned kettle corn.

Last night, as I witnessed the Indians score a fantastic 11 runs in the first inning, I gobbled down a hot dog, munched and suckled on sunflower seeds, and after that seventh-inning stretch, quenched my thirst and dessert craving with some frozen Minute Maid lemonade. It made the 12-8 win all that much more sweeter.
Mommy G’s is Spokane’s first gourmet grilled cheese…street car. This ambitious idea was cooked up by owners Christy Hense and Spokane local (of 22 years) Jessica Rapp. And it certainly is a downtown hit. A prime location on the corner of Washington and Sprague, Jessica says they have a real busy lunch crowd from 11:30 straight through to 1:30. Originally and conceptually planned as a Panini cart, Jessica decided to simplify it, seeing as how a Panini might as well be a glorified grilled cheese anyway. And as a mother of five boys, she has her fair share of experience cooking up these tasty homemade feel good treats.
Mommy G’s is Spokane’s first gourmet grilled cheese…street car. This
ambitious idea was cooked up by owners Christy Hense and Spokane local
(of 22 years) Jessica Rapp. And it certainly is a downtown hit. A prime
location on the corner of Washington and Sprague, Jessica says they have
a real busy lunch crowd from 11:30 straight through to 1:30.
Originally and conceptually planned as a Panini cart, Jessica decided to
simplify it, seeing as how a Panini might as well be a glorified
grilled cheese anyway. And as a mother of five boys, she has her fair
share of experience cooking up these tasty homemade feel good treats.

But Mommy G’s got that special twist, the uniqueness you desire in street food. But as a street

cart, it’s not always easy. "I think people are scared”, says Jessica of uneasy and wary new

customers. "But we’re clean. We’ve got a sink, we wear gloves, and we use fresh products. Everything we do is exactly like what they do in a restaurant.” Using a variety of breads including Great Harvest, fine cheeses like Gruyere, Muenster, Havarti, Brie, and Fontina, Mommy G’s sure isn’t lacking in quality. They offer combinations like #2 Christy’s Creation, with Spicy Habanero Jack Cheese with cilantro pesto and sliced tomato on Great Harvest corn bread, not to mention #6 Sammy’s Sammich with medium Cheddar cheese, hardy bacon, fresh avocado all on honey wheat bread. And they even offer aioli and tomato basil soup with gorgonzola for dipping! Personally, I tried #4, the French Onion, and I'm not a mushroom lover, but the fresh seasonal mushrooms on this sandwich made it a perfect afternoon snack.

All in all, this tasty little cart is worth a visit, especially for those who already find themselves

downtown, but even for those who aren’t regulars to the downtown streets, making the effort togo out your way for Mommy G’s results in Mommy G’s going all out for you!
Coeur d’Alene doesn’t eat out enough. Not nearly enough. Especially considering how affordable and worthwhile the experience, and the food, really is. This is why, I’ve compiled a restaurant tour. A dining guide of sorts, for a weekend of good food, pretty cheap prices, and most importantly – your first taste of summer memories. These restaurants are new, fresh, and definitely worth a try.
Today, I have reached an epiphany, one that I believe I obtained after spending a day strolling along Sherman Avenue. Each June, as Ironman approaches, summer becomes a hazy lazy realism, and Coeur d’Alene truly comes to life. Between the culture, the food, the lake, the sun – what isn’t there to love about a simple afternoon in Downtown Coeur d'Alene?

My epiphany wasn’t inspired by the changing of the season. Rather, it comes from the fact that Coeur d’Alene has recently become a hub for adventurous and curious foodies, with restaurants opening left and right, week after week. And it was after exploring and personally indulging myself at just a few of the many new restaurants, that I reached my epiphany. Coeur d’Alene doesn’t eat out enough. Not nearly enough. Especially considering how affordable and worthwhile the experience, and the food, really is.

This is why, I’ve compiled a tour. A dining guide, of sorts, for a weekend of good food, pretty cheap prices, and most importantly – your first taste of summer memories.

FRIDAY NIGHT

Just off of Sherman, on the corner of Front Avenue and Sixth Street, at Parkside, you’ll find a restaurant, rolling into its second month of service, the Grille from Ipanema.

This Brazilian Steakhouse is an experience within itself, offering a traditional Brazilian style of dining "churrasco”, with Grille from Ipanema being a "churrascaria,” where waiters move from table to table, offering you and tempting you with various meats on skewers, which are all roasted over mesquite coals in a pit. These "gauchos” come equipped with knifes to slice portions onto your plate (and friendly smiles too!).

Churassco-style dining came to the United States about 10 years ago, as they started to appear in every big city, and Grille from Ipanema has many of its diners wondering: "Why didn’t Coeur d’Alene get one sooner?”

The Grille from Ipanema is only the second Brazilian Steakhouse in Idaho and has received a huge welcoming from the community.

The interior is modern, yet warm (with upscale and beautiful seating also available on the patio), and you immediately feel a shift in the air as the authentic Brazilian music causes the waiters, hosts and even the owners and manager, Adriano, Fabrizio and Kleber, to sing.

They ask you to "come in hungry” for either lunch and dinner ($14.99/$24.99), but they suggest coming in on a weekend night to get to the full experience of the churrasco. An encounter like this is certainly something different, but manager Kleber Dousza insisted it was one that everyone should have.

The food is tasty and unique; from the succulent pork with brown sugar, top sirloin, tender marinated chicken, and sweet pineapple all off of the grill, to the full buffet with everything from fresh salads and fried bananas to pastas, beans, and rice. And to quench your summer thirst, they’ve got tantalizing Brazilian Lemonade, as well as stunning and elegant blended specialty drinks like the Brazilian Sun Rise.

All in all, after a night of feasting, festivities and fun, you will not leave hungry.

SATURDAY

Though, we’ve all seen Cricket's Downtown Bar and Grill on Sherman for years now, it’s a restaurant that can sometimes be by-passed when thinking of fine dining.

But that’s all about to change, what with the new owners, Rico and Bob Ciccone. Since April, they’ve had brother Frank Ciccone create a completely new, Italian family influenced menu, though the food is still of traditional family variety with everything from their delicious oysters, house-made mozzarella sticks, fresh salads, thick deli sandwiches, hot meatball sandwich and even a few upscale options like Port Ribeye.

And that’s not all. Crickets offers more than just food; it presents a chance for everyone to have a good time, with their friendly and witty staff, and an atmosphere of comfort and familiarity. Not to mention their drinks will have your jaw dropping. From the full decked-out and garnished Bloody Mary to the puckering bright green Cricket Cooler.

And it’s all in the family here, with Rico having started at age 19 as a dishwasher at Crickets. Rico worked his way up to a bartender and eventually bar manager, where he grabbed former owner Jim Elder’s eye. Now retired, Jim "passed down” Crickets, trusting that Rico would keep it the same.

The community, in general is really happy about the change, excited for Rico and girlfriend, and new manager, Naomi Daniell, who have both still tend bar at Crickets. "We grew up here,” says Naomi. Which is partly why they are returning to the original logo, from the year that Crickets opened. To get back to the basics, simple homemade food, good beer, fresh ingredients and a friendly face.

LATE NIGHT SATURDAY

After a few drinks when you’re feeling a little … hungry, what sounds better than some junk food?

A gourmet sausage sounds better, doesn’t it?

And that’s what the Dangerous Dog (on Fourth Street just off of Sherman), home of some "serious sausage”, has to offer you, even as late as 3 am on Friday and Saturday nights. And with 22 different types of hotdogs and sausages, you are sure to find some sort of dog to tease your taste buds. Among these they offer twelve all-beef hotdogs with everything from the Dangerous Dog, the Pac Northwest and the Blue Demon. As well as their Serious Sausage, which offers nationwide company’s specialty sausages prepared like gourmet meals.
Though, the biggest attraction at the Dangerous Dog is their menu section "Around the World in 80 Dogs,” with an international array of authentic sausages and hotdogs from as far as Argentina and India. And almost all of your dogs cost between $5 and $8! Talk about cheap, good eats.
SUNDAY MORNING

As you wake up Sunday morning, your body recovering from the food coma of dining and meals prior, you realize - something’s missing.

That perfect sweet treat. And where better to go then Sweet B Cupcakes, behind Scratch, and find the smiling bubbly face of owner Shawna Leonard, who does all of the baking herself, each night.

Sweet B Cupcakes, an adorable little shop of pink and polka dots, is anything but just frills and fluff. Their cupcakes mean serious business, with Shawna starting out as a catering company and working her way up to owning a cupcake shop that sells out almost daily.

Not that it’s any surprise with their unique flavors like Mojito, White Chocolate Lavender, and their freshly toasted Smore cupcake. Not to mention their Good Morning Cupcake was voted as the People’s Choice Winner in the CdA Chocolate Affair. Rumor is they’ve got a pear and goat cheese cupcake in the works!

Shawna, being the delight that she is, humbly described how surprised she was at the number of regulars who come into her shop day by day, asking for their favorites. But don’t be surprised if that ends up being you. The cupcakes are delectable, the shop is delightful, and you’ll leave deliriously happy.

MONDAY

You wake up. You go back to work. You rave to your friends, co-workers, and especially your boss at the amazing fine dining you had this weekend. You receive a promotion. You win the lottery. You live happily - well, you get the idea.
